Renowned acupuncture innovator and founder of Fu Needle therapy, Dr. Zhonghua Fu, visited the United States briefly at the invitation of the Alhambra Medical University Alumni Association (AMUAA). On July 13, he delivered a highly engaging academic lecture at Alhambra Medical University’s Los Angeles campus. Although the event was arranged on short notice, it received enthusiastic participation from licensed practitioners, students, and scholars of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The Alhambra Medical University Alumni Association is a professional organization composed of AMU graduates dedicated to fostering academic exchange and collaboration among alumni, promoting the heritage and development of Chinese medicine, and facilitating Sino-American academic cooperation to advance members’ professional skills and service quality.
During the lecture, Dr. Fu provided an in-depth explanation of the theoretical origins and clinical applications of Fu Needle therapy. Rooted in the classical Chinese medical text Huangdi Neijing, this innovative technique integrates traditional principles with modern medical advancements. By stimulating the superficial fascia layer, Fu Needle therapy effectively unblocks meridians, regulates qi and blood flow, relieves pain, and addresses the root causes of diseases, often achieving rapid and remarkable therapeutic results.
A special interactive session was included, during which Dr. Fu provided one-on-one guidance to help attendees master precise Fu Needle techniques. The lively atmosphere and active engagement of participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm and significant learning gains.
Dr. Fu’s clear explanations and clinical demonstrations resonated deeply with attendees, many of whom expressed their intent to actively apply the knowledge in clinical practice. The AMU Alumni Association extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Fu for generously sharing his expertise and for his humorous and engaging teaching style. They warmly welcome Dr. Fu to continue sharing his clinical experience in future visits.
In recognition of Dr. Fu’s outstanding contributions to acupuncture education and the international promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Alhambra Medical University proudly conferred upon him the honorary title of Adjunct Professor.
The AMU Alumni Association looks forward to Dr. Fu’s future visits to further promote the development and dissemination of Fu Needle therapy in the U.S., enhance Sino-American academic cooperation in Chinese medicine, and contribute to the global advancement of traditional medical sciences to benefit more patients.

California Marks 50th Anniversary of Acupuncture Legalizatio
Leaders from Across Communities Gather to Honor Milestone in Integrative Medicine
[Los Angeles, July 12, 2025] — In celebration of the 50th anniversary of acupuncture legalization in California, the South Coast Chapter of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA-PCC) hosted a grand commemorative event in Los Angeles. The event was co-organized with the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine (UCLA CEWM), the Alumni Association of Alhambra Medical University, and supported by a wide range of acupuncture organizations and educational institutions from diverse communities. This milestone occasion not only recognized the remarkable progress acupuncture has made in the United States but also underscored the growing role of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the modern American healthcare system.
APAPA-PCC Chair Dr. Yongping Chen highlighted that in 1975, then-Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 86, officially legalizing the practice of acupuncture in California. “This marked a new chapter for TCM in the United States,” said Dr. Chen. “Over the past 50 years, California has issued more than 20,000 acupuncture licenses, benefiting millions and becoming the state with the highest number of licensed acupuncturists and the most advanced acupuncture education in the nation.”
Professor Ka-Kit Hui, Director of UCLA CEWM, emphasized his commitment to advancing the "Whole Person Care" model, which promotes integrated, affordable, and accessible healthcare grounded in both Western and Eastern medical traditions.
Dr. Zhaoping Li, Director of the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center, brought promising news—announcing that the VA will significantly increase investment in integrative health services, including acupuncture, and refer more veterans to acupuncturists.
The event also featured a congratulatory video message from former Governor Jerry Brown, widely regarded as the "Father of Acupuncture in California." He praised acupuncture’s integration into mainstream medicine and expressed his vision for it to become a foundational element of "American medicine."
Congresswoman Judy Chu, honored as the “Mother of Acupuncture,” delivered a passionate keynote speech. She recounted her 25-year journey championing legislative efforts to improve acupuncture education, secure workers’ compensation coverage, and advocate for Medicare reimbursement. She recalled overcoming three major battles: raising California's acupuncture training hours to international standards, fighting for workers’ comp inclusion, and ensuring herbal dispensing by acupuncturists remained tax-exempt.
Freshly elected Congressman George Whitesides playfully dubbed himself the “Grandson of Acupuncture” and pledged to co-sponsor Rep. Chu’s federal acupuncture bill, H.R.1667. California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, a longtime supporter, called herself the “Aunt of Acupuncture.” State Senator Maria Elena Durazo emphasized expanding acupuncture services to the Latino community, while new Assemblymember Jessica Caloza declared her willingness to be a “Sister of Acupuncture.”
Other distinguished attendees included Patricia Horton, Senior Policy Advisor to Senator Adam Schiff; Jennifer Tang, District Director for Assemblymember Mike Fong; San Gabriel Mayor Denise Menchaca; Monterey Park Mayor Vinh Ngo; former Assemblymember Mike Eng; and Ben Bodea, Executive Officer of the California Acupuncture Board. Congressman Ted Lieu also sent a certificate of recognition, delivered by former diplomat Angus Simmons.
The event welcomed two world-renowned pioneers in acupuncture: Professor Jiao Shunfa, inventor of Scalp Acupuncture, and Professor Fu Zhonghua, founder of Floating Acupuncture. Dr. Guodong Zhang, President of the Alumni Association of Alhambra Medical University, organized a special lecture series featuring "Jiao-Style Scalp Acupuncture" on July 12 and "Floating Acupuncture" on July 13, showcasing modern interpretations of traditional techniques.
A vibrant cultural program added festive flair to the evening. Dan Holloway opened with the U.S. national anthem, followed by Lyn & Marcos performing their original song “For America.” Neuroscientist Dong Liu's operatic rendition of “Nessun Dorma” brought the house to its feet. Dr. Shudong Li performed Chen-style Tai Chi, Dr. Shujuan Zhang showcased a graceful Tai Chi fan routine, and Bonnie Xu led a children’s violin ensemble in “You Raise Me Up.” Former Monterey Park Mayor Yvonne Yiu performed “Walk of Life,” while the university dance troupe presented the Mongolian dance “Morigele River.” Nupur Kumar offered an exuberant Indian dance performance, and the American Zen Cultural Center closed with a meditative Zen yoga presentation.
In their closing remarks, Dr. Yongping Chen and Professor Ka-Kit Hui called for continued collaboration between Eastern and Western medicine, using this 50th anniversary as a launching point to advance Whole Person Care models that can benefit California, the nation, and the world.

为庆祝加州针灸合法化50周年，美国亚太裔公共事务联盟南加海岸分会（APAPA-PCC）联合加州大学洛杉矶分校中西医结合中心（UCLA CEWM）、仁爱医科大学校友会，以及各族裔针灸公会和医学院校，于洛杉矶盛大举办纪念庆典。此次活动不仅彰显了针灸在美发展的辉煌历程，也昭示着中医药文化在美国医疗体系中的广阔前景。
APAPA-PCC主席陈永萍博士表示，1975年加州州长杰瑞·布朗（Jerry Brown）签署SB 86法案，标志着针灸在加州的合法执业地位正式确立，开启了中医针灸在美发展的新篇章。50年来，加州已发出超过两万张针灸执照，服务人群达数百万，加州也成为全美针灸师最多、针灸教育最为先进的地区之一。

🌿加州针灸发展历史详解
一、早期传播阶段（19世纪末 – 1960年代）
1. 移民传播
随着 “华人劳工” 在19世纪中叶大量移居美国西海岸，特别是加州旧金山湾区和洛杉矶，针灸作为传统中医的一部分传入美国。早期针灸主要限于华人社区内部，诊所多为家族式，缺乏英文传播资料，不被主流医学采纳。
2. 被视为“民俗疗法”

I. Early Transmission Period (Late 19th Century – 1960s)
1. Brought by Chinese Immigrants
In the mid-19th century, large numbers of Chinese laborers immigrated to the U.S. West Coast, especially the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles in California. Acupuncture, as a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), was brought along with them.
Initially practiced only within Chinese communities
Family-run clinics with little to no English-language materials
Not accepted by mainstream Western medicine at the time
2. Seen as a “Folk Remedy”
The U.S. medical system was dominated by Western biomedicine. Acupuncture was viewed with skepticism, lacked legal status, and was marginalized. Only a few Western physicians who had contact with acupuncture overseas attempted to introduce it, but the lack of education and legislative frameworks severely limited its spread.
II. Legalization and Policy Formation (1970s)
1. Rise in Public Awareness
In 1971,"James Reston", a reporter for "The New York Times", underwent an emergency appendectomy in China and received acupuncture for post-operative pain. His article describing the experience sparked massive media and public interest in acupuncture in the U.S.
2. California Leads in Legal Recognition
1975: California passed legislation formally recognizing acupuncture as a legal medical practice, becoming the "First U.S. state" to regulate acupuncture through law.
This landmark move prompted other states to follow suit in legalizing acupuncture.
